Morocco Cracks Down on Influencer Tax Evasion, Targets Social Media Earnings

In Morocco, the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI) has decided to track down Moroccan influencers in order to fight tax evasion. Many Moroccan YouTubers and influencers use international law firms specializing in tax evasion to place their income in tax havens in exchange for a substantial commission.
The tax authorities want to put an end to tax impunity. In this sense, the Parliament has approved a new provision aimed at increasing the tax base, ensuring equity, and fighting fraud this year. It has in its sights the influencers. In an article entitled "Influencers, fat cows and tax impunity", the Moroccan magazine Le Temps reports that the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI) has questioned internet entrepreneurs about their income earned in recent years and that the number of online influencers continues to increase.
The tax authorities want "now to have access to all income, including international transfers and cash payments". The DGI has already deployed a team of tax auditors to investigate the income of influencers. Their work consists of examining the number of followers and subscribers on social networks, such as Facebook, Instagram and the video service YouTube. It was found that the income amounts to around 100,000 DH net per month, or even more.
