Morocco Cracks Down on Food Speculators to Combat Rising Prices

In Morocco, the government claims to be waging an implacable fight against rising prices and speculation. Tons of food products stored in unauthorized warehouses have already been seized during inspection and price control missions in wholesale markets and businesses.
To inquire about the quality of the products on sale, to fight against unfair business practices, to reduce the number of intermediaries in order to guarantee a fair supply chain from producer to wholesale merchant in order to preserve the purchasing power of citizens. This is the mission assigned to the joint commissions in charge of monitoring and controlling prices set up by the local authorities in various provinces and prefectures. They have inspected various points of sale, wholesale markets, retail outlets and even weekly markets, reports the Arabic-language daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
This general mobilization has borne fruit. Several tons of food products stored in unauthorized warehouses have been seized and dozens of fines have been issued. In total, 11 tons and 800 kilograms of food, some of which are expired, have been seized in Rabat.
