Morocco's COVID-19 Crisis Leaves 700,000 Jobless, Government Offers Aid

The covid-19 crisis has forced many people into unemployment in Morocco. The State has decided to come to the aid of these collateral victims, estimated at more than 700,000, through an allowance financed by the Special Fund for the Management of the Pandemic.

These unemployed employees will receive a flat-rate allowance of 2,000 DH through the National Social Security Fund. The cost of the operation is fully borne by the Special Fund for the Management of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

In total, there are 700,000 employees declared to the CNSS who are unemployed in Morocco as of April 1, 2020. The final deadline for filing declarations of unemployed employees for their compensation was set for this Friday, April 3, 2020.

The Minister of Employment and Professional Integration, Mohamed Amekraz, in a statement, said that more than 700,000 employees declared to the CNSS as unemployed have registered to receive the flat-rate allowance. He also stated that due to the covid-19 pandemic, 113,000 companies are in a situation of temporary work stoppage since March 15, 2020.

The CVE’s projections are largely exceeded compared to the number of employees registered on the covid19@cnss.ma portal. The CVE had planned 430,000 employees for 4 billion DH in compensation for the period from March 15 to June 30, 2020. 111,353 companies are in total or partial work stoppage for a workforce of 688,297 employees, according to another report announced last Wednesday by Saâd Eddine El Othmani, Head of Government, through social networks. Unemployment benefits will be paid starting Monday, April 6, 2020.

The unemployment allowance for the month of March was 1,000 dirhams; that of April, May and June 2020 has been increased to 2,000 dirhams.
