Morocco's COVID Aid Reaches 6 Million: Survey Shows Two-Thirds of Affected Households Supported

According to a survey conducted by the High Commission for Planning (HCP), some 6 million Moroccans, or two-thirds of households affected by the Covid-19 crisis, have benefited from public aid.

According to the results of the survey conducted from June 15 to 24 by the High Commission for Planning (HCP) among 2,169 households, the situation of the most active sectors that have suffered the adverse effects of the Covid-19 crisis appears to be at least alarming, reports L’Économiste.

The newspaper notes a drop in purchasing power due to a 50% decrease in monthly income, a more glaring situation in rural areas (62%) than in urban areas (46%). "The drop in the average monthly income of craftsmen and skilled workers reached 74%, 71% for workers, 65% for farmers, 40% for employees, 32% for middle managers and 24% for senior executives," it reports.

Based on these results, the newspaper concludes that one in four people has benefited from public aid, adding that "30% of private sector, formal or informal, workers have sought aid from the state or the employer under the support programs for those who have lost their jobs".

Agriculture and construction received 77% and 91% respectively in terms of compensation for income losses by sector. This is followed by services (17%), industry (47%) and trade (57%).
