Morocco Court Invalidates Two MPs’ Elections for Violating COVID-19 Rules

New elections will be organized at the level of the Guercif constituency. This is the decision of the Constitutional Court, which on Tuesday invalidated the seats of two deputies for violation of the state of emergency during the election campaign.
The high court annulled the election of Mohammed El Barnichi (PAM) and Ali Lejghaoui (PI). This decision follows an appeal by their challenger from the USFP party, Said Aziz, who accused the two candidates, declared elected after the legislative elections held on September 8, 2021, of not respecting the state of health emergency imposed throughout the country.
In its ruling, the Court upheld the plaintiff’s claim, ordering the cancellation of the election of the two "elected officials". According to resolution no.: 193/22 AD, the reason for the cancellation of the election of the deputies is due to their non-compliance with the state of emergency by organizing mass gatherings in which the number of participants exceeds 100 people.
Partial elections are therefore planned in the said constituency to fill the vacant seats, in accordance with the provisions in force.
