Morocco’s Consumer Prices Rise 0.4% in May, Led by Non-Food Goods

Slight increase in consumer prices in Morocco in May 2024. The consumer price index (CPI) recorded an increase of 0.4% compared to the same month last year, according to data published by the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
This slight increase is explained by the rise in prices of non-food products (+1.7%), while food prices fell by 1.2%.
Among non-food products, gas prices jumped by 12.3%, while restaurant and hotel prices increased by 3.2%. Conversely, health prices fell by 1.2%.
Regarding food products, the largest declines were observed for fish and seafood (-5.7%), milk, cheese and eggs (-2.1%), oils and fats (-2%), fruits (-0.3%), bread and cereals (-0.2%) and coffee, tea and cocoa (-0.1%). On the other hand, meat prices increased by 0.8% and vegetable prices by 0.2%.
CPI variations are not uniform across the country. The largest declines were recorded in Al-Hoceima (-1%), Kenitra (-0.8%), Fez (-0.7%), Oujda (-0.5%), Tetouan, Tangier and Settat (-0.2%) and Casablanca, Meknes and Errachidia (-0.1%). Conversely, increases were observed in Guelmim (+1.0%), Laayoune (+0.7%), Marrakech and Dakhla (+0.3%) and Agadir and Beni-Mellal (+0.2%).
