Morocco's Consumer Price Index Rises 0.3% in June, Marking Fifth Consecutive Monthly Increase

The consumer price index (CPI) has continued its upward trend observed in recent months. As of the end of June last year, it rose by 0.3% compared to the previous month, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

This is its fifth consecutive monthly increase, after the increases observed in February (0.6%), March (1.8%), April (1.8%) and May (0.3%), the agency said in an information note on the consumer price index for the month of June.

This new trend is driven by the 0.5% increase in the index of non-food products and the 0.1% decrease in the index of food products, it is specified. On a monthly basis, this increase in the CPI is attributable to the 0.6% increase in the index of non-food products and the 0.2% decrease in the index of food products.

Between May and June last year, the food products that experienced an increase were mainly "Oils and fats" (2.7%), "Milk, cheese and eggs" (2.1%), "Mineral waters, refreshing drinks, fruit and vegetable juices" (0.8%) and "Coffee, tea and cocoa" (0.4%). On the other hand, the decreases concerned "Vegetables", "Fish and seafood", "Fruits" and "Meats". Regarding non-food products, the HCP note indicates that the increase mainly concerned the prices of "Fuels" (9.2%).

The largest increases in the CPI were recorded in Meknes and Beni-Mellal (0.9%), in Casablanca and Marrakech (0.8%), in Tetouan and Laayoune (0.7%), in Agadir and Oujda (0.6%) and in Kenitra, Rabat, Guelmim and Settat (0.5%), noting that on the other hand, decreases were observed in the city of Fez (0.7%).
