Morocco’s Construction Industry Grinds to Halt Amid COVID-19 Lockdown

The health crisis and confinement have led to the halt of almost all real estate construction sites in Morocco.
In 2020, the Covid-19 crisis did not spare the real estate and construction sector. The confinement measures have virtually brought the sector, which represents 14% of GDP and one million jobs, to a standstill, with a 90% drop in construction site activity, according to Challenge.
The reasons for this situation are multiple. There is the movement of workers which was no longer possible. There are also the difficulties in supplying and transporting construction materials. During the crisis, the use of digitalization and telework by some companies, not to mention the implementation of secure on-call services, could not reverse the downward trend.
Faced with this situation, several players in the sector are proposing measures for the recovery of the real estate market for a gradual restart of construction sites.
