Morocco Considers Weekly Lockdown as COVID-19 Cases Projected to Surge

The epidemiological situation in Morocco will have to continue its upward trend until the end of the year, with the risk of a new and more virulent pandemic wave of the Coronavirus. These are the conclusions of a recent survey by the High Commission for Planning.

A return to a second lockdown, similar to that of March, would have dramatic repercussions on an already very weakened national economy, the recovery of which requires several months of sacrifices, the HCP points out in its report.

According to the study’s forecast statistics, Morocco could reach the bar of 475,000 coronavirus infection cases by the end of 2020. However, one day of nationwide lockdown per week would have the effect of reducing the incidence of the epidemic, by breaking its dynamics.

If well implemented, the strategy, whose effects would be more tangible than a localized management, could spare the country nearly 72,000 new cases of contamination by the end of December 2020, the study concludes.
