Morocco Considers New Public Sector Wage Hike, Minister Confirms

A new wage increase for Moroccan civil servants is currently under discussion within the government. The news was confirmed by the Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment and Skills, Younes Sekkouri, in parliament.
This increase will complement those granted at the beginning of the year, in particular for the SMIG (+5%) and the SMAG (+10%). But this increase will probably only concern the public sector, as the wage increase in the private sector is conditional on an agreement within the framework of social dialogue, he specified. Nevertheless, the government has expressed its commitment to increasing the number of collective agreements in the private sector, which are supposed to promote wage revaluation.
This decision comes after the unions called on the government to support the purchasing power of civil servants and employees, and to ease the tax burden. The last wage increase dates back to April 2022, as part of the social dialogue agreement, which also included easing the conditions for access to the old-age pension and the possibility for insured persons to recover a share of the employer and employee contributions at retirement age.
