Morocco Considers Pay Boost to Stem Doctor Exodus Amid Healthcare Concerns

Improving doctors’ salaries to prevent them from leaving abroad. This is a proposal from the parliamentary group of the Istiqlal Party (PI), which calls on the Akhannouch government to curb the brain drain in the medical sector.
In his intervention, Noureddine Mediane, head of the PI parliamentary group, indicated during the discussions on the 2022 finance bill that the lack of material and social incentives are pushing Moroccan doctors to offer their skills to other countries. For the MP, it is urgent to find a definitive solution for the well-being of the health system, which now more than ever needs qualified personnel.
Mediane revealed, for example, that at the time of the launch of the initiative to recruit 3,000 doctors, only 67 doctors participated in it. He also stated that the Moroccan doctor refuses to work for a salary not exceeding 8,000 dirhams per month, while in France it is 4,000 euros per month and even more in Canada. He therefore suggested that the government grant them a salary of around 2,000 euros so that they are not tempted to go abroad.
The head of the Istiqlal group stressed that it is also unacceptable for Morocco to train doctors for the benefit of foreign countries such as France, Belgium, the Netherlands, when the kingdom is sorely in need of them.
