Morocco Considers Major Overhaul of Taxi Industry Amid Regionalization Push

On the sidelines of the second National Conference on Advanced Regionalization, held in Tangier, small and large taxi drivers presented their demands for a reorganization of their sector.

"The latest National Conference on Advanced Regionalization, through which King Mohammed VI called for the need to develop the transport and mobility system in all Moroccan cities, requires an update of the action map of professionals at the national level," said Mustapha El Kihel, secretary general of the Moroccan Democratic Union of Labor to Al Ayam 24. According to his explanations, "this call refers us to the supervision" by the sovereign "of several construction sites and major transport projects, including the tramway, the busway as well as the high-speed train, in addition to the layout of new railway lines in recent years, which shows that the sector is progressing at two speeds."

According to the union leader, there are serious problems mainly related to areas under government responsibility, particularly the taxi sector. This "suffers from confusion and marginalization, because this sector is facing major administrative dysfunctions," he explained. He therefore believes that "it is time to implement and deconstruct the recommendations of the development model." He also calls for "responding to the demands of professionals, particularly on the issue of ’authorizations, to ’engage in serious and responsible dialogue with the stakeholders, without excluding any other party’.

El Kihel also asked the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, to examine these demands before 2030, the year in which Morocco will co-host the World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
