Moroccan Taxi Drivers Demand Fare Increase Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Moroccan taxi drivers are sounding the alarm. They are calling for a revision of the rates, which they consider unsuitable for the surge in fuel prices and the suspension, last May, of the exceptional aid granted to the road transport sector.
The National Coordination of Taxis deplores the lack of serious and constructive dialogue with the government and the Ministry of the Interior to address the essential points of their demands. It calls on all professionals to a national meeting on Thursday, December 26 in Casablanca. This will be an opportunity to discuss the many challenges and problems facing the sector. Among the main topics to be discussed will be the liberalization of the taxi licensing sector, the management of which remains problematic.
The coordination demands the discussion of the point relating to the government’s project to support or compensate for the rise in fuel prices, currently suspended due to a policy deemed deficient, making a revision of the rates now essential. Taxi drivers also point to the rise of VTCs, which they consider one of their main concerns.
The professionals hope for concerted action and appropriate measures which, according to them, will make it possible to get back on track and meet their expectations. They expect the competent authorities to make concrete and lasting decisions to improve their situation.
