Morocco Considers Delaying September Elections as COVID-19 Cases Surge

The spread of the Delta variant in Morocco could not only disrupt election campaigns but also push the government to postpone the municipal, regional and parliamentary elections scheduled for September 8.
According to some sources, the worsening of the epidemiological situation in the kingdom could lead to the postponement of the next elections, reports Assabah. These sources indicate that the number of infections exceeds 8,000 cases per day and that the intensive care services are overwhelmed. Consequently, conducting an election campaign under normal conditions proves impossible.
The gatherings of thousands of citizens under tents, in closed rooms, houses, hotels and at the headquarters of political parties during the election campaigns could promote contamination. Although the Ministry of the Interior has banned gatherings and activities of more than 50 people in open spaces, while requiring an authorization issued by the local authorities in case of exceeding this number, it has been found that this decision has been trampled on. This is evidenced by the reports that the law enforcement agents have transmitted to the minister Abdelouafi Laftit.
Since last Friday, travel between cities has been restricted, the night curfew has been confirmed and parties have been banned following the recommendations of the scientific committee. For now, the government has not yet decided on a possible postponement of the elections. An opinion from the scientific committee is expected in mid-August.
