Morocco to Compensate Hammam Workers Affected by COVID-19 Closures

The government wants to compensate the employees of the traditional hammams closed to counter Covid-19, announced on Monday in Parliament in Rabat the Minister of State in charge of Human Rights and Relations with Parliament, Mustapha Ramid.
Good news for hammam employees. In front of the House of Representatives, the minister specified that these employees will benefit from compensation due to the damage suffered following the closure of their workplace for 11 months.
Most of these hammams are located in 15 prefectures and provinces out of a total of 82, said Minister Ramid. According to the PJD minister, the reopening of these hammams is subject to the improvement of the epidemiological situation and the decision of the ad hoc local committees. They were closed in areas facing a high number of coronavirus infections because they are spaces conducive to the spread of the virus, he noted.
The minister also stressed the effects of Covid-19, particularly on vulnerable groups, while recalling the efforts made to reduce the repercussions of the pandemic, particularly in terms of protecting businesses and supporting affected categories.
Since the closure of these public baths, employees and employers have mobilized to plead with the government for a reopening while respecting barrier gestures. But the government has long remained deaf to their request.
