Morocco’s Clothing Exports to EU Plunge 42% Amid Industry Crisis

In the clothing sector, Morocco is experiencing a collapse of its exports to Europe, due to its lack of visibility. To reverse this trend, the Kingdom must very quickly develop a new strategy.
Morocco’s exports to the European Union in the clothing sector fell by 42% during the first five months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.
"The situation is dramatic and requires a quick reaction to relaunch the sector," says a source in the Moroccan clothing industry to Médias24, who reports that this is because Morocco’s customers have preferred to place their orders elsewhere, with customers having favored many other countries, due to Morocco’s lack of visibility.
All the difficulties the clothing sector in Morocco was already experiencing before the health crisis have been exacerbated, as has the endemic unfair competition, through "smuggling, unfair imports, subsidized products from certain countries like Turkey that have invaded the market and weakened the sector," the same source said.
But all is not lost. Morocco can still reverse this trend. This requires "a clear strategy and good positioning," as the health crisis has created opportunities that Morocco has every interest in capturing.
