Morocco Closes Over 200 Schools as COVID-19 Cases Surge Among Students and Staff

More than 200 schools, or a total of 128,599 students, were closed on Tuesday in Morocco. The reason for this decision is the discovery of cases that tested positive for coronavirus.
Before the House of Councillors, the Minister of National Education, Saaid Amzazi, announced that these cases concern 1,708 students, 1,767 teachers, 289 administrative staff and 187 other staff. According to the government spokesperson, 10 other educational institutions have also been closed. They are located in closed neighborhoods in the provincial directorates of Khénifra, Jerada, M’diq-Fnideq and Chefchaouen and have 6,805 students. According to him, this measure had also been taken last month against 2,400 schools, which accommodate nearly a million students.
Thanks to these measures, no school outbreak has been reported after the recent visits of 5,340 public establishments and 400 private establishments carried out by the regional commissions. In its recommendations, this commission had suggested to the minister to strengthen the involvement of partners in the disinfection process of the establishments and to limit the gathering of parents at the school gates.
