Morocco Closes 159 Schools, Including Foreign Missions, Amid Omicron Surge

A total of 159 schools (private and public) including 14 foreign missions have closed due to the widespread spread of Covid-19.

On its Facebook page, the Ministry of National Education, Primary Education and Sports provided an update on the Covid-19 contamination cases recorded in 12 regions of Morocco, during the period from January 24 to 29. This weekly monitoring bulletin of the epidemiological situation shows that 159 schools (private and public) have closed due to the widespread spread of the virus, including 14 foreign missions, while 389 classes have been closed.

With 795 confirmed cases, 22 schools closed and 20 classes closed, Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima is the region that has recorded the most contaminations in its schools. It is followed by the Fès-Meknès region (653 cases, 12 schools closed, 23 classes closed), Rabat-Salé-Kenitra (575 cases, 100 establishments closed and 255 classes closed), Marrakech-Safi (317 cases, 4 schools closed and 16 classes closed), Casablanca-Settat (244 cases, 12 schools closed and 34 classes closed), Souss-Massa (219 cases, 4 schools closed, 19 classes closed), Beni Mellal Khénifra (147 cases, 1 school closed, 9 classes closed) and the Oriental (140 cases, 3 schools closed, 5 classes closed).

The regions of Guelmim Oued Noun and Darâa-Tafilalet recorded 80 cases and 44 cases respectively among students, but the schools and classes remained open. The Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region recorded 42 cases among students with the closure of one school and the suspension of 7 classes, while the Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region recorded 31 Covid-19 cases, with the closure of one class.

Faced with the rapid spread of Covid-19 cases, the department of Chakib Benmoussa calls for compliance with all precautionary measures and measures stipulated in the health protocol.
