Morocco Clinches 18 Medals at Inaugural Pan-African Special Olympics Games

The curtain fell on the Pan-African Special Olympics Games on January 30 in Cairo, Egypt. Morocco won 18 medals, across all competitions.
The harvest was good for the Kingdom. Its representatives on Egyptian soil defended themselves, each in their discipline, to win 18 medals, including six gold, during these first Pan-African Special Olympics Games which took place from January 23 to 30.
Morocco, during this competition, which saw the participation of 800 athletes representing 42 countries, stood out in three disciplines, namely basketball, athletics and petanque.
In basketball, the two Moroccan men’s and women’s teams prevailed over their Egyptian counterparts by winning first place. As for the Moroccan athletes, they won 3 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze medals. As for the ambassadors of the petanque discipline, they won 1 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze medals.
Initiated in 1968 by Eunice Kenedy Shriver, the younger sister of President Kennedy, Special Olympics is an association present in 172 countries. It works for the inclusion of children and adults with intellectual disabilities by offering them physical and sports training as well as Olympic sports competitions.
