Morocco Climbs to 5th Largest Olive Oil Producer Globally, Forecasts Show

Morocco will reach a production of 140,000 tons of olive oil according to the forecasts of the Spanish company "Juan Vilar" for the 2020-2021 agricultural season. It will thus be the fifth largest producer in the world.

The analyses carried out by the department of studies of the olive oil sector of the Spanish company "Juan Vilar" show that Morocco will rise to fifth place among the producers of olive oil in the world. Its production is estimated at 140,000 tons for the 2020-2021 agricultural season, or 5% of world production.

Spain will be the largest producer of olive oil with 1,510,000 tons, or 49% of world production, with Italy in second place with a production of 280,000 tons (9%). Greece then comes with 220,000 tons, (7%) of world production. Tunisia, for its part, must reach a production of 170,000 tons, (6%) of world production.

Behind Morocco, Portugal will be the sixth largest producer in the world with 135,000 tons, then Turkey (130,000 tons). As for Syria, it will maintain its production and rank eighth in world olive oil production according to the same data.

The analysts also predict that world olive oil production will decrease by 5% compared to the previous season with 3,086,500 tons in the 2020-2021 season. In Morocco, this decline is due to the rainfall deficit.
