Morocco’s ’Chennaqa’ Speculators Drive Up Summer Vacation Costs, Sparking Outrage

Moroccans have warned on social media against the "chennaqa" (speculators) who drive up the prices of products and services in the kingdom, especially in the North, as the summer season approaches.
"The chennaqa, after having played their role to perfection in inflating the prices of sheep for the sacrifice, have started to speculate on the prices of housing for daily rental. They impose rates for car parks on the streets, and for the occupation of public spaces on the beaches," denounce the activists on social media, calling on the competent authorities to put an end to this phenomenon which is growing in the kingdom.
Many Moroccans are victims of the blackmail of these "chennaqa" or their intermediaries during the summer holidays, the Internet users have said, explaining that many Moroccan families did not buy a sheep this year to perform the ritual of the sacrifice due to the exorbitant prices of these animals. This situation has forced some Moroccans to opt for a celebration of Eid al-Adha outside the kingdom, particularly on the Costa del Sol, in southern Spain.
