Morocco’s Check Payment Incidents Rise 2.2%, Costing 13.8 Billion Dirhams in 2019

The number of check payment incidents is up 2.2%, or 470,515 incidents in 2019. The total cost of these incidents is estimated at 13.8 billion dirhams, according to Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM).
In its annual report on the economic, monetary and financial situation for the 2019 fiscal year, the Moroccan central bank noted that the regularization operations took into account 111,375 checks for an amount of 1.7 billion dirhams against respectively 113,756 and 1.8 billion dirhams in 2018. According to the bank, the number of bans on issuing checks increased by 3% to 689,045 people, of whom 87.2% are individuals.
Regarding unpaid bills of exchange (LCN), their number remained virtually stable at 666,812 for an amount of 25.1 billion DH. As for the stock of unpaid LCN not yet regularized, it stood at 2.5 million cases, for an amount of 93.2 billion DH, with a proportion of 62.7% of individuals.
As for the risk centers, 5.1 million active loaded contracts were recorded, up 5.4% for an outstanding amount of 856.1 billion DH. According to the same report, the number of consultations reached more than 2.5 million, thus accumulating a total of 16.1 million consultations since the establishment of the 1st Credit Bureau in 2009.
