Morocco-Ceuta Border Fence Upgraded: Barbed Wire Removed, Height Increase Planned

The perimeter of the fence serving as the border between Morocco and Ceuta is undergoing renovation. The barbed wire is being replaced by less sharp elements.
The construction work on the new over eight-kilometer fence between Morocco and Ceuta is progressing rapidly. The project is led by the ministry of Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
Today, almost the entire Berrocal section, where migrants pass and get injured by barbed wire, has already been replaced by "less sharp" elements, in Marlaska’s words.
Once the wires are removed, it will be considered to increase the height of the current 6-meter fence to 10 meters after a soil study. At a cost of 18 million euros to be mobilized by Ceuta (8.3 million) and Melilla (9.5 million), the work is scheduled to be completed in September.
