Morocco-Ceuta Border Eases Food Restrictions for Personal Use

Travelers from Morocco have been authorized for a few days to cross the Ceuta border with certain food products such as vegetables, fruits, bread derivatives or spices, but in limited quantities and intended exclusively for personal use.

Certain food and other products can now cross the Ceuta border with Morocco, in accordance with the traveler regime and the applicable customs regulations. These products must be exclusively for personal use, and "under no circumstances" for commercial purposes, sources consulted at El Foro de Ceuta specify.

Thus, travelers from Morocco can transport in limited quantities aromatic herbs, condiments, spices (2 kg); bread, cakes, biscuits, confectionery, pasta, etc. (maximum 5 kg per vehicle); fruits, vegetables, packaged oil, flour, sugar, etc. (maximum 10 kg per vehicle). However, the passage of meat, fish, milk and dairy products and eggs is strictly prohibited.

The measure aims to prevent the trafficking of goods and the return of smuggling, before the implementation of commercial customs which will probably take place at the end of the year. To this end, the authorities stamp the passports of travelers to prevent the same person from entering and leaving several times a day with products. Offenders will simply be expelled back to Morocco, the same sources indicate.

On the Moroccan side, it seems that travelers can enter with purchased clothes and shoes, "but in limited quantities and hidden in a travel bag to avoid problems," the same sources warn, specifying that "Morocco is very strict with food products".
