Moroccan Mother and Children Homeless After Controversial Eviction in Ceuta

Yusra Abdeltif, a woman of Moroccan origin, and her three minor children aged 15, 10 and 8 years old, were evicted on Monday from their home located in the El Príncipe Alfonso neighborhood in Ceuta. They are now living on the street.

The police carried out the eviction of the mother following a call reporting the alleged illegal occupation of a family home. Two patrols went to the scene to verify the facts and proceed with the eviction of the woman, in accordance with the procedures in force. "They evicted us without notice and we had nowhere to go," she denounced to El Faro de Ceuta.

The evicted woman explained that she was not squatting the premises, but that the property was the subject of a family dispute. She had alerted the police, informing them that the family of her deceased partner and owner of the house was trying to gain access to the house to put her out on the street. But when the police arrived, the woman was surprised to find that "the action was against her and her three minor children who ended up on the street".

"The house belongs to the father of my children, who is deceased. They took everything from us. I already lost my house in Las Torres and now this one. I don’t know what we’re going to do," she said, desperate. The 37-year-old woman says she lived in Spain for a while after being a victim of gender-based violence from her ex-husband. After the latter’s death, she returned to Ceuta on July 27 and settled with her children in this house where they had resided.

"I don’t understand that the police are protecting my ex-partner’s family rather than the children who are going to be left on the street," lamented Yusra, noting that this situation is very common in Ceuta. For the moment, it is not known whether the social services have taken charge of the family and have been able to find them housing.
