Morocco Celebrates First International Argan Tree Day, Highlighting Economic Impact

It was the city of Agadir that hosted on May 10 the celebration of the very first International Argan Tree Day initiated by Morocco and the UN. An opportunity to learn more about this sector that employs 25,500 people in Morocco and weighs 1.2 billion dirhams in turnover.
This day, which is a source of national pride for Morocco, was organized in a hybrid format, the ministry indicates, specifying that this sector is a source of local employment, empowerment and socio-economic inclusion of rural women. Argan in the kingdom is more than 1,200 tons of oil for export - its annual production is estimated at 5,000 tons -, generating a turnover of around 280 million dirhams at the end of 2020.
To date, of the 200,000 ha of argan grove planned, the Waters and Forests have been able to rehabilitate more than 164,000 ha, the same source said, specifying that the volume of investments made by all ANDZOA partners exceeds 31 billion dirhams between 2012 and 2020.
400,000 other ha of argan grove are awaiting rehabilitation, as well as the extension of argan cultivation on 50,000 ha, the production of 10,000 tons of argan oil, of which 5,000 tons will be exported. These are all objectives carried by the new "Generation Green, 2020-2030" strategy, aimed at accelerating the development of the sector and which will involve the signing of a new program contract by 2030.
