Morocco’s Cash Circulation Surges to 319 Billion Dirhams Amid Pandemic, Central Bank Reports

In 2020, cash demand in Morocco marked an "exceptional" increase, with the currency in circulation growing by 20.1% to 319 billion DH, in value, or nearly 30% of GDP. An unprecedented surge due to the effects of the health crisis.
According to the latest annual report of the Central Bank, the number of banknotes in circulation showed an increase of 17% in volume to 2.1 billion and that of metal coins saw an increase of 2% to 2.9 billion units.
In its note, BAM also notes that the circulation of banknotes is still dominated by the 200 DH denomination, which represents 54%, and that of coins by the 1 dirham denomination with a share of 30%.
To ensure the supply of the economy in the context of the crisis, the central bank had to adapt its production and delivery schedules.
"Indeed, the Central Bank has put in place a flexible organizational mode for production since the first days of confinement, which has allowed the continuity of activity while respecting the health measures. It was thus able to produce 584 million new banknotes and 93 million new coins," the report points out.
