Morocco’s New Car Sales Drop 8% in 2022 Amid Global Supply Chain Challenges

Over the whole of 2022, new vehicle sales have seen a decline, according to statistics from the Association of Vehicle Importers in Morocco (AIVAM).
Thus, overall new car sales in Morocco stood last year at 161,410 units, compared to 175,360 vehicles in 2021, a decrease of 8%, according to the president of the AIVAM association, Adil Bennani, who on Thursday in Casablanca presented the annual review of the sector, marked by external shocks.
According to him, this slowdown in sales is attributable to the shortage of semiconductors, the disruption of global logistics, galloping inflation, the rise in hydrocarbon prices, as well as the contraction of domestic demand in the second half of 2022.
In detail, the year’s sales are divided between passenger cars (PC) with 143,186 registrations, against 154,123 in 2021, as well as light commercial vehicles (LCV) with 18,224 sold against 21,237 a year earlier.
By brand, Dacia continues to dominate the PC market with a 27.2% share, ahead of Renault (15%) and Hyundai (9.2%). However, the PC segment fell by 7% compared to 2021. This negative growth is impacted by stock availability, it is noted. Same trend at the LCV level, which recorded a 14% year-on-year decline. In this category, Renault takes the lead on the podium with 26.6% market share. DFSK lines up in second position with 15% market share, followed by Ford with 10%.
