Morocco Car Holidays Dominate Tourism Transport Trends

For their holidays in Morocco, Moroccans continue to overwhelmingly favor the road. The car dominates the train and plane in tourist travel within the country.

The car remains the essential means of transport for Moroccans during their holidays in the Kingdom. According to the 2025 Turespaña report dedicated to the Moroccan tourism market, road travel dominates domestic tourism very widely.

In 2024, Moroccans used their vehicles in 94.8% of their tourist trips within the country. The train accounts for only 4.3% of the total, while domestic flights remain marginal, with just 0.9% of trips.

This domination of the car confirms the weight of family habits in Morocco holidays. Half of annual domestic trips are motivated by visits to family or friends. Leisure trips come next, with 35% of the total. For many households, going on holiday therefore means first traveling to a city of origin, a family home or a familiar destination.

The road also prevails because it allows more flexibility. It facilitates family departures, luggage transport, travel between multiple cities and stays in areas less well served by train or plane. In a country where holidays remain often linked to the extended family, this freedom matters greatly.

The phenomenon is particularly visible during summer. July and August concentrate nearly 40% of Moroccans’ domestic and international trips. This strong seasonality puts significant pressure each year on major road networks, coastal cities, beach resorts and northern destinations.

The most visited regions confirm this logic. Marrakech-Safi concentrates 29% of domestic trips, Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma 17% and Souss-Massa 13%. These regions combine tourist appeal, coastline, major cities and family ties.

The north of the country holds a special place. In the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region, 55% of tourism is domestic. Moroccans are therefore particularly present there, especially during the high summer season, attracted by beaches, proximity and family stays.

Accommodation follows the same logic. Homes of relatives or friends represent 44% of the domestic market, ahead of apartment rentals, which account for 29.6% of stays. Hotels remain important, especially for short stays, but a large part of holidays continues to be organized around the family network.

This car dependency does pose several challenges. It increases traffic congestion, puts pressure on roads in summer and makes holidays more dependent on fuel costs. It also shows that trains and domestic flights remain far from being a massive alternative for Moroccan tourists.

To further develop domestic tourism, Morocco will need to improve mobility between regions, make public transport more attractive and offer packages better suited to families. For now, one thing doesn’t change: when it comes time to go on holiday, the car remains the undisputed queen of Moroccan roads.
