Morocco: Calls to boycott Algerian artists
Moroccan activists are multiplying calls to boycott artists of Algerian nationality, citing the persistent political tensions between the two countries. This mobilization is particularly targeting the comedian Abdelkader Secteur, whose new national tour is scheduled to begin soon with a stop planned at the Mohammed V Theater in Rabat.
The controversy has gained momentum on social media following the announcement of the show titled "Marhaba", scheduled for February 8th in the capital. Activists are urging organizers of both public and private events to suspend the hosting of Algerian nationals in reaction to Algeria’s perceived hostile positions towards the Kingdom. For these activists, the artistic programming cannot be dissociated from the current diplomatic climate, and they are calling for a break in cultural relations until the political context is clarified.
Abdelkader Secteur had previously enjoyed strong popularity in Morocco, where he regularly presented his shows in several cities and participated in various television programs. His "one-man show" style, blending Algerian dialect and French language, addresses everyday themes such as immigration, marriage, and social issues. His previous performances within the Kingdom had met with significant public success, ranking him among the Algerian comedians most followed by Moroccans.
