Morocco Breaks Tourism Record, Becomes Africa's Most Visited Country

It’s confirmed: Morocco has outclassed Egypt and became the most visited country in Africa in 2024 after reaching a new tourism record. Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) have greatly contributed to this achievement.

The upturn has been confirmed for Moroccan tourism. "The Morocco destination is hitting hard in 2024. With 17.4 million tourists by the end of December, Morocco has reached the ambitious goal of its roadmap, initially planned for 2026," says the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy in a press release. Compared to 2023, this represents a 20% increase compared to 2023, or nearly 3 million additional tourists. With this new record, Morocco outclasses Egypt, which did not cross the 15.7 million mark in 2024, and became the most visited country in Africa last year.

Morocco owes this platform to the massive arrival of Foreign Tourists (TES) who reach 8.8 million visitors (+23%) and Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) who represent 8.6 million arrivals (+17%). "This record of 17.4 million testifies to the considerable progress that our country is experiencing under the enlightened vision" of King Mohammed VI, notes Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy. She explained that "this exceptional performance is the result of targeted investments by our government in this vital sector for the economy of our country, as well as the constant mobilization of professionals in the sector".

"These results, exceeding the 2019 figures by 35%, attest to the relevance of the tourism roadmap and confirm Morocco’s positioning as an essential tourist destination and the first destination in Africa," adds Fatim-Zahra Ammor, while congratulating "all the public and private actors who have allowed Moroccan tourism to shine".
