Morocco Boosts Tax Breaks for Professional Athletes, Citing Short Careers

Professional athletes will see the flat-rate deduction on their employment income increase from 40 to 50%. This provision, contained in the 2020 Finance Bill (PLF), was defended by the Minister of Finance during a meeting with the press on November 5th. Mohamed Benchaâboun justified this tax benefit by the fact that "the careers of athletes are extremely short".
During a meeting with press representatives on November 5th, the Minister of Finance defended the tax benefits granted to professional athletes and sports clubs.
According to the reports quoted by TelQuel, "the professional deduction for an employed person is 20%, while for a retiree it is 55%, and for an athlete, due to the longevity of his career, it should be 50%".
For the minister, "after 10 or 15 years of career, an athlete no longer has any income". And, since "artists already benefit from a 40% deduction", it was time for athletes to benefit from it as well.
This provision, according to the website, should also encourage athletes to "return to normalcy" by declaring the full amount of their income.
