Morocco Boosts Maritime Fleet for Summer Travel: 32 Ships to Serve 471,000 Weekly Passengers

In order to contribute to the success of the Marhaba 2022 operation, the launch of which is imminent, the Ministry of Transport and Logistics has put in place a major fleet plan, said Amane Fathallah, Director of the Merchant Navy under this department, on Thursday.

According to the director’s explanations, the plan put in place will be adapted to port infrastructure, flow management capacities, and expected forecast traffic. She stressed that 32 ships will be mobilized to ensure 572 weekly rotations, with a total capacity of 471,000 passengers and 124,000 vehicles per week.

And that’s not all. Amane Fathallah also announced that 14 ships will be mobilized on the main Tanger Med-Algeciras axis, and will be able to make about 47 rotations per day. "To facilitate flow management, tickets will be sold this year with reservations, including for short-haul," she said.

The ministry is committed to ensuring that maritime operators comply with all safety and security provisions. They are required to be at the service of passengers, to ensure their safety and protection. This is also one of the concerns of the Moroccan-Spanish transit joint commission, which met on Thursday in Rabat, co-chaired by Khalid Zerouali, Wali Director of Migration and Border Surveillance and Ms. Isabel Goicoechea Aranguen, Spanish Under-Secretary of State for the Interior.

The commission is working to ensure that this edition of the transit operation goes well. The two parties have taken several measures in this direction, covering fluidity, security and safety, assistance and proximity measures, communication actions, as well as prevention and vigilance measures in view of the epidemiological context. Precautions will also be taken to avoid price gouging, especially for maritime crossings.
