Morocco Boosts Banana Imports from Canary Islands Amid Pandemic

Morocco has significantly increased its imports of bananas from the Canary Islands during the global health crisis of the coronavirus. A total of 38 million kilos of bananas were imported.
Morocco is a destination of choice for the banana industry in the Canary Islands, reports Freshplaza. While the volume of bananas marketed in the Canaries during the state of emergency fell to 700,000 kilos, imports to Morocco amounted to nearly one million kilos of bananas.
According to the president of ASPROCAN, the kingdom has been put in perspective, two or three years ago in order to supply part of its national banana production during the period from April to August. This experiment was decided at a time when these exports can in turn balance the supply and demand of Canary bananas on the Spanish market, he continues.
According to the same media, with the Moroccan market being quite demanding in terms of quality and prices, the export volumes from the Canary Islands must correspond to the interest of Moroccan buyers and sellers. They must also use a solidarity mechanism, fully financed by the sector itself, in order to help avoid losses for farmers and banana producers.
