Morocco Bolsters EU Lobbying Efforts to Protect Fruit and Vegetable Exports

Morocco has decided to strengthen its game to defend its farmers on the European stage. The Moroccan embassy in Madrid has just called on a Spanish consulting firm, Acento Public Affairs, to make its voice heard among EU institutions.

The stakes are high: in 2023, the kingdom exported nearly 1.8 billion euros worth of fruits and vegetables to the European Union, making it a major player in the sector. All these products transit largely through Spain before flooding European shelves.

But this lucrative trade is now threatened, according to Africa Intelligence. Between sometimes unfavorable decisions of the European Court of Justice, the competition from new producing countries and increasingly strict health standards, Rabat must play it tight. Not to mention the discontent of European farmers who view this competition from the south with a bad eye.

Acento Public Affairs, founded by a former Spanish minister, specializes in European affairs and has a solid knowledge of the agricultural world. Its mission: to plead the cause of Morocco with Brussels decision-makers, anticipate changes in regulations and facilitate the access of Moroccan products to the European market.

The firm will also have to act as a firefighter to extinguish the protectionist fires lit by some member states, concerned about the competitiveness of Moroccan products. A real balancing act for Acento, which will have to navigate between divergent interests and trade tensions. The ultimate goal: to ensure the sustainability of Moroccan agricultural exports to Europe.
