Morocco Blocks Meeting in Agadir Supporting Kabyle Independence Movement

The competent authorities of Agadir have prohibited the holding of a preparatory meeting for the establishment of an "Action Group to support the Kabyle people".

"The authorities of the prefecture of Agadir Ida-Outanane did not authorize the holding of this consultation meeting which was scheduled for Thursday at the headquarters of a political party. This, on the instructions of the governor of the prefecture and wali of the Souss-Massa region, Saaïd Amzazi," reports the daily Assabah.

This preparatory meeting for the constitution of an "Action Group to support the Kabyle people" was prohibited because it "did not fit with the state’s strategy, focused mainly on the roadmap drawn up by the King, including the principle of non-interference in the sovereignty of States," details the publication.

The initiative comes following the proclamation of the independence of Kabylia on April 20, 2024, and in a context of repeated provocations by Algeria aimed at undermining Morocco’s territorial integrity. But the kingdom does not intend to react to these hostilities from its neighbor.

In his latest Throne speech, King Mohammed VI stated: "I reassure Our brothers in Algeria: you will never have to fear malice from Morocco, which is in no way a danger or a threat to you. [...] The security and stability of Algeria, and the tranquility of its people, are organically linked to the security and stability of Morocco."
