Morocco's Billion-Dirham Souk Revolution: Modernizing Tradition for Rural Prosperity

The Moroccan government is making the modernization of weekly souks a priority. In this regard, it has developed a large-scale plan with an envelope of one billion dirhams.

The weekly souks will not disappear. The government intends to transform these local places into organized, attractive and sustainable hubs, capable of reconciling tradition and modernity while supporting local development, reports Challenge. In this regard, a large-scale plan with an envelope of one billion dirhams will be implemented. Parliamentarians have already been informed of the project through a presentation by the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit. This funding will be provided by several departments, including the Ministry of the Interior through the General Directorate of Local Authorities, the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, as well as the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

"Weekly markets are not just places of commerce, they are economic and social pillars for rural areas," recalled Abdelouafi Laftit, adding that the investment of one billion dirhams is not just a cultural project, but a strategic lever for economic development. These exchange spaces help to keep rural populations in place, promote commercial exchanges and represent one of the main sources of funding for some municipalities. They also have a symbolic, social and cultural dimension, making them places of sociability and meeting at the heart of rural life.

From a strictly fiscal point of view, the annual revenues of most souks do not exceed 500,000 dirhams, with rents ranging from 2,000 to 7,000 dirhams. But the real value of these markets far exceeds these amounts.
