Morocco Becomes World’s Top Importer of Chinese Tea, Spending $123.5 Million in 2024

Morocco has become the world’s largest importer of Chinese tea, with purchases reaching $123.5 million between January and July 2024. This is what the General Administration of Chinese Customs revealed, specifying that China exported its tea to 123 countries during this period.
Ghana, Malaysia, Uzbekistan and Japan are also among the main customers of Chinese tea. Russia, on the other hand, has seen its imports increase by 17% compared to the previous year.
This news confirms the Moroccans’ love for this beverage. As the French physician Louis Thomas wrote in 1918, "drinking tea is a traditional act, a sacred practice, imbued with seriousness, meaning and respect".
The history of the introduction of tea in Morocco is told by historians. Initially, Moroccans were great coffee drinkers. But after the English had offered tea as a gift to the sultans, they adopted it and shared it with their court. The habit then spread very quickly to all segments of society.
