Morocco Bans Public Square Water Washing Amid Severe Drought Crisis

To address the problem of water scarcity threatening Morocco, the government has asked local authorities to take urgent measures to ensure rational management of available water resources.
Thus, the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, recommended "activating the prefectural and provincial commissions provided for in Article 89 of Law 36-15 on water," according to a statement from the ministry.
The purpose of this legal provision is to "ensure the coordination and monitoring of the implementation of the necessary actions for the rational management of available water resources for the preservation of the resource and to guarantee the supply of drinking water under satisfactory conditions."
Other "complementary actions" such as launching awareness campaigns on the protection of water resources and the rationalization of water consumption are also planned.
Laftit also invited local authorities to ban the washing of public roads and squares using conventional water. This also applies to illegal water withdrawals from boreholes, wells, springs, watercourses and irrigation canals.
