Morocco Awarded Hosting Rights for 2025 Africa Cup of Nations

It’s official. The executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has just designated Morocco as the host country for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Meeting in Cairo on Wednesday, the CAF executive committee chose Morocco to host the next AFCON 2025, announced its president, Patrice Motsepe, at a press conference which was marked by a minute of silence in tribute to the victims of the earthquake in Al Haouz, Morocco and the floods in Libya.
In total, 22 committee members voted for Morocco, whose file was presented by Fouzi Lekjaa, the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). No vote against Morocco’s candidacy was recorded among the members present and two members did not participate in the meeting.
Morocco was competing with Algeria, the Nigeria-Benin duo, and Zambia. On Tuesday evening, to everyone’s surprise, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced the withdrawal of its candidacy. The Nigeria-Benin duo also retracted, reportedly to prepare for the 2027 edition. The third in the running against Morocco, Zambia, also ended up renouncing its candidacy.
