Morocco Awaits Tough Draw in 2022 Africa Cup of Nations Group Stage
The draw for the Africa Cup of Nations will take place this Tuesday in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Morocco is part of the first pot, due to its recent performance in the FIFA ranking. It only remains for it to know the countries with which it will have to fight to emerge victorious from the group stage.
Many sports observers believe that the probability of Morocco being in the same group as countries like Egypt or Côte d’Ivoire is very high. The draw marks a very important step in the organization of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, which had been postponed by a year due to the new coronavirus pandemic. CAF will divide the 24 teams into six groups of four teams.
According to the daily Al Akhbar, the fact of being in the first pot will allow the Atlas Lions not to cross paths in the group stage with countries like Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal or the defending champions Algeria. However, Vahid Halilhodzic’s protégés will not be able to escape Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana or Mali, who are in pot 2 with Guinea and Burkina Faso.
In pot 3, we find Gabon, Zambia, Mauritania, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde and Sierra Leone, while pot 4 is composed of Sudan, the Comoros Islands, Malawi, Gambia, Equatorial Guinea and Ethiopia.
Vahid Halilhodzic is eagerly awaiting the draw, in order to get to work as he intends to lead Morocco far in this African competition. In a recent media outing, he had indicated that he was aiming for the title of African champion for the Atlas Lions.
