Morocco's Automotive Exports Surge 49.5% in Early 2021, Matching Pre-Pandemic Levels

Automotive exports reached 35.4 billion dirhams during the first five months of 2021, an increase of 49.5% compared to the same period in 2020.

This increase is mainly due to the 44% increase in sales in the construction segment, 47.4% in wiring and 41% in vehicle interiors and seats, according to the Foreign Exchange Office in its bulletin on the monthly indicators of foreign trade in May 2021, specifying that "these exports are equal to those made during the same period in 2019".

As for textile and leather exports, they recorded an increase of 38.8% to 13.6 billion dirhams at the end of last May. This increase is due to the increase in sales of ready-made garments by 44.8% and those of knitwear by 55.3%. On the other hand, exports of phosphates and derivatives increased by 17.4% to 24.16 billion dirhams at the end of May 2021, due to the increase in sales of phosphoric acid by +2.18 billion dirhams and natural and chemical fertilizers by +1.72 billion dirhams.

As for exports in the "agriculture and agri-food", "Electronics and Electricity" and "other mining" sectors, they recorded increases of 6.7%, 40.2% and 55.2% respectively. On the other hand, exports in the aeronautics sector experienced a 6.6% drop at the end of May 2021, reaching 5.52 billion dirhams, losing 1.4 points in total exports to settle at 4.4%, the Foreign Exchange Office said.
