Morocco's Automotive Exports Surge 38.9% in Q1 2021, Defying Pandemic Slump

The automotive sector has shown great resilience in the face of the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. In the first quarter of 2021, the sector recorded growth of 38.9%.

In its recent statistics, the Office des Changes indicated that automotive exports were 22.602 billion dirhams in the first quarter of 2021, compared to 16.274 billion in the first quarter of 2020, an increase of 38.9%. The segments concerned by this increase are "Construction" at more than 51.9%, i.e. +9.18 billion dirhams, "Wiring" at more than 23.4%, i.e. 7.6 billion dirhams, the "Vehicle Interior and Seats" segment at 24.9%, i.e. 2.3 billion dirhams.

This increase is proof that Morocco is focusing on the development of the country’s automotive sector. In addition, several manufacturing plants, including the Renault plants in Tangier and the Peugeot plant in Kenitra, are located in the country and promote the establishment of an ecosystem with the creation of thousands of jobs. Thanks to these factories, many young people are opting for mechanical and automotive studies to benefit from the many opportunities that arise in this sector in Morocco.

Furthermore, in a study, the Moroccan think tank Policy Center for the New South indicated that "with the establishment of Renault Melloussa, the share of automotive assemblies and manufacturing will increase significantly, from 12% in 2011 to 47% in 2018". An improvement that allowed in 2018 to have a coverage rate of automotive goods exchanges of all kinds of 72%. In addition, this year, many companies want to improve their production in the kingdom. These include Clayens NP Morocco through the expansion of its industrial unit in Mohammedia, specialized in the production of precision metal parts, and Stellantis (ex-PSA) and the Technical Center for Vehicle Equipment Industries "Cetiev", which have just installed a new "Cetiev 2.0" site.
