Morocco’s Auto Sales Plummet 12% as Zero-Interest Car Loans End

In Morocco, for the first four months of 2019, new vehicle sales, across all categories, have almost halved, Hespress has found. The reason given is the end of the 0% credit.
This particularly concerns passenger vehicles (VP) and light commercial vehicles (VUL) whose sales have declined sharply, according to Hespress. A 12% decline is reported for the first four months of this year. This is not without incident on the number of new registrations, which went from 60,650 last year to 52,948 this year over the same period. Data that clearly shows that the situation is worrying.
According to Adil Bennani, president of the Association of Vehicle Importers in Morocco (AIVAM), this considerable drop observed in sales at the end of April is due to "the holding of the Auto Expo last year, but also the withdrawal of the 0% credit, which impacted operations for a "small" share of between 5% and 10%".
Despite this situation, the distribution of market shares between the different brands shows that Dacia is still in the lead and continues to gain the esteem of Moroccans. Analyzing the figures for the month of April, Hespress notes that "the Romanian brand accounted for a 29.33% share, while Renault posted a 16.89% share, followed by Peugeot (7.19%), Hyundai (6.36%), Volkswagen (5.65%), Citroën (5.28%), Fiat (4.20%), Toyota (3.21%), Nissan (2.70%) and Ford (2.58%)".
While the trend in the Moroccan automotive market is currently shared between SUVs and sedans, Adil Bennani believes that the SUV segment will continue to grow more than the rest of the market, particularly "driven by demand and the expansion of sizes and brands". The president of AIVAM clearly stressed that hybrid represents a "real alternative to traditional motorization" today and calls on Moroccans not to miss such an opportunity.
