Morocco Assures Ample Food Supply Despite Surge in Demand

The unusual flow of certain agricultural food products could not create a shortage on the Moroccan market. In a press release, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries stressed that supply will be made gradually.

Even if the fear of running out of stock at home has prompted Moroccans to massively stock up on food products, the Ministry of Agriculture reassures that "the high demand will not suffer any discontinuity in its supply of agricultural and fishery products. The replenishment of the markets will be ensured on a regular basis," rejoiced the minister, calling on the population to serenity and calm. He recalled that Morocco can not only count on its large stock, but also on "the continuity of agricultural production and fishing which will not suffer any interruption."

The same goes for imported products, as well as for market garden products that have experienced a rather rapid flow in recent times. For tomatoes, potatoes and onions, in particular, "the country’s needs will be largely met during the period from March to June."

In detail, it should be noted that "the forecast production volumes that will be available during this period amount to 352,000 tons for tomatoes, 910,000 tons for potatoes, and 412,000 tons for onions (mainly green). These available volumes are largely sufficient to meet national needs, including during the month of Ramadan.

The minister calls on all the actors and operators concerned to put in place "the strict sanitary and hygiene conditions necessary at all levels of the production, processing and distribution chain of agricultural and fishery products." Such measures aim to ensure "the continuity of the activity of these services, as well as their distribution channels despite any new restrictions."
