Morocco Asserts Sovereignty in Border Talks, Strengthens Ties with Spain

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, spoke at length about the relations between Morocco and Spain, built on "strategic, stable and evolving ties".

The relations between Morocco and Spain are in good shape. The Minister of Foreign Affairs recalled the centuries-old relations that bind the two brotherly kingdoms. According to Nasser Bourita, the ties between the two kingdoms are strategic, stable and evolving.

According to the head of Moroccan diplomacy, these ties cover vast and varied areas, such as trade, the fight against organized crime and terrorism. "In addition to the human ties that unite us, in many respects, these relations between two neighboring countries are exemplary," justifies the guest of the Grand Format program.

Regarding the Kingdom’s decision to trace its maritime borders, the minister was crystal clear: Morocco is fully entitled, and this is a sovereign and non-negotiable choice, to trace its maritime space, freely and without resorting to any form of authorization or consultation. On the other hand, and this is what international laws and conventions on the matter say, these steps can run up against overlaps between maritime plateaus common to two countries. Around the world, this is settled through negotiations, to which Morocco and Spain are fully open.

In this regard, the minister reassures by noting that the two countries are working to put in place a framework for this dialogue. The idea is to move beyond the simple concept to put in place mechanisms. Three priorities preside over this framework: the means, the people who will be part of it and the agenda of the work.
