Morocco Arrests Over 72,000 for Violating COVID-19 Lockdown, NGOs Express Concern

The police have arrested more than 72,000 individuals who have violated the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus. NGOs denounce this irresponsible behavior of some citizens who endanger their lives as well as those of others.
In total, 72,685 people have been arrested nationwide as part of the operations carried out on the ground, according to a recent statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN). Among them, 32,842 people were placed in custody for preliminary investigations ordered by the competent public prosecutors. The others were subjected to investigation, check-in and identity verification procedures.
Al Massae states that these offenses have been committed in both urban and rural areas, where individuals continue to visit family members under various pretexts. For NGOs, the citizens who are the perpetrators are jeopardizing their health and that of their loved ones. Similarly, this situation could de facto lead to the extension of the state of health emergency; which will inevitably result in heavy economic losses.
