Morocco’s Argan Oil: Beauty Secret and Health Elixir Gains Global Popularity

Considered as "Morocco’s liquid gold," argan oil is a highly sought-after ingredient in the beauty industry. Its consumption also brings many health benefits.
Once used by Berber women to rejuvenate their skin, strengthen their hair, and protect them from cold and wind, argan oil is now an essential ingredient in cosmetics manufacturing. This oil is extracted from argan, the fruit of the argan tree that only grows in southwestern Morocco. Argan oil for the cosmetic industry is obtained from raw almonds, while argan oil for consumption is extracted by roasting argan almonds, according to La Razon, specifying that the former is odorless and has a lighter color than the latter.
Argan oil is widely used as a cosmetic due to its richness in essential fatty acids such as omega-6, vitamin E, and polyphenols, making it a perfect antioxidant. Thanks to its moisturizing, antioxidant, and regenerative properties, it is very effective in combating skin dryness and aging, as well as irritations and even chickenpox. Argan oil is also effective for burns or against rheumatism. It is a faithful ally of athletes and sportspeople who use it to soothe muscle pain.
Beyond the world of beauty, consuming argan oil is also very beneficial for health. It can be consumed with bread or used as an ingredient in the preparation of traditional Moroccan dishes such as couscous, meat or fish tagine, or salad. However, it is not recommended to fry it. Its regular consumption can help stabilize cholesterol levels. It also acts as an appetite suppressant, giving it an anti-obesity effect and promoting liver function.
Whether cosmetic or food-grade, argan oil can be recognized not only by its label but also by its slightly golden color and mild scent. It is advised to avoid direct contact with eyes and nose and strongly discouraged to apply it on open wounds or on reactive skin or skin with any pathology.
