Morocco’s Archaeological Sites Draw Over 2 Million Visitors, Boosting Tourism Revenue

The cultural department of the supervisory ministry announced on Tuesday that more than 2 million people visited the 19 archaeological sites between January and September 2019.
More than two million people visited the 19 archaeological sites between January and September, according to a statement from the department of the Ministry of Culture and Communication. A significant increase in the revenues of these sites was noted, amounting to 110 million dirhams for the same period.
To this effect, the same press release praised the efforts of the cultural department of the supervisory ministry for "all the sustained efforts it is deploying to preserve and enhance the elements of the tangible cultural heritage, archaeological sites and historic buildings, as a source of economic development and lever of sustainable development of the Kingdom". This is done as part of the optimization and development of its service offering, "to make it attractive for visitors to these sites, and increase its revenues through optimal management including the legal, institutional, material and human aspects".
In addition, the ministry is also taking concrete measures to restore and enhance a new batch of archaeological and historical sites, and turn them into tourist and cultural attractions in line with integrated development projects at the local, regional and national levels, the same source recalled.
