Morocco Announces 450km Dual Carriageway Project from Dakhla to Mauritanian Border

The Government has committed to a project to build a 450-kilometer dual carriageway between the city of Dakhla and the border town of Guerguerat with Mauritania. The announcement was made on Monday, July 22, 2019 by the Head of Government to the deputies.
The Head of Government provided the information to the people’s representatives during their monthly session devoted to regional development and water on Monday, July 22, 2019, reports the360.ma.
"I had a discussion on this subject last Saturday with the President of the Dakhla Regional Council, Yanja El Khattat, and the Wali of the region, who expressed the wish to widen the road leading from this city to Guergarat," said Saad Eddine El Othmani.
He also said that "this is a project that will benefit not only the Saharan provinces but all of Morocco, since the dual carriageway will increase trade between the north and the south."
As for the schedule or financing of the project, no information has been released. The Dakhla-Guerguerat road crosses several localities in the Moroccan Sahara, including Aousserd, El Argoub and Bir Gandouz.
On another note, Saad Eddine El Othmani hinted that the advanced regionalization project will be completed before the end of his term in 2021. "I will implement this project before I leave," he promised.
